Wooden Outdoor Buildings Are Wonderful In Springtime Storms

It's almost spring in the Pacific Northwest, and we are enjoying some typical big storms right now that are dumping a lot of rain and snow in the whole northwest region. It's almost spring in the Pacific Northwest, and we are enjoying some typical big storms right now that are dumping a lot of rain and snow in the whole northwest region. This will continue for quite a number of months, and it's something we are all grateful for so that the mountains accumulate a lot of snow for the summer runoff as well as fill up the reservoirs to provide water later in the year. When the summer months do not get any rain, the reservoirs are a blessing for everyone and eliminate the need for water rationing.

For average homeowners who have accumulated a lot of items that are either too many or too big to fit in the home or the garage, it is such an advantage to have wooden outdoor buildings erected on the property for additional storage and to get your excess items inside a storage building instead of being outside in the elements. Rain and snow and damaging excess heat can simply ruin things left outside in no time.

Whether you buy a kit for the shed plans or design the building yourself, it can be any size or shape you need and one that you can afford. The architecture can be an exact match to your home with style and exterior color and texture, or it can be something that compliments the home beautifully, too, by having a similar design. I'm sure you've seen both extremes of sheds. Some are really nice and add a lot of value and eye-appeal to the property. On the other hand, some sheds look really trashy and would add value to the property if they were totally removed.

Working with wood is particularly nice because it is easy to work with and easy to add on to if you are accomplished with a hammer and nails and a good structural eye for design and efficiency. Some wooden buildings are designed so that part of it is for storage or workshop, and another part of the building is for a family playroom or entertaining area. Perhaps a pool table could go in the play area to enjoy with family and friends. This area could also be utilized as a hobby room. If planned properly and cleverly, it can even be designed where the hobby workshop can be folded up like a Murphy bed against the wall and provide full floor space for other fun activities.

There are so many options to choose from that would add beauty, utility and efficiency to the space being occupied by your new storage building.

When building a shed, there are a lot of things to consider. Some of the things you want to be certain of are the size of your shed, how you plan on building it and what materials you will need. Other aspects to consider include whether or not it will be attached to your house or other structure, what type of flooring you want to use, what kind of lighting you want it to be equipped with, shelving, structural load points for heavy equipment are just to name a few. A great deal of thought should go into the planning phase before the project is even started. Building a shed should be a detailed project. Therefore, you should outline everything that you believe needs to be considered before beginning to work on it. Building a shed should not be a 'throw together' project, and if done right will save you considerable time and money. Planning is key.

  1. The first thing you will want to consider when building a shed is the size you will want it to be. When thinking about this, you want to consider shelving and fit outs inside your shed. If you want to fit vehicles, tractors, and lawn mowers inside your shed; you will need to plan the overall size accordingly. You want to be sure you have a basic idea of everything you want to fit inside your shed. That way you can be sure to have the perfect size already established even before you start building your shed.
  2. Next, you want to think about how you want your shed built. Consider the structure, the interior of your shed as well as the exterior. It is also important to consider any additional structural strong points that may need to be suspended from the roof or walls. This will need to be incorporated into the structural design plans.
  3. Another thing to consider when building a shed is whether or not you want it attached to your house. There are several ways this can be done. You might want a pathway leading to the house or a covered roof walkway. These are just some of the things to think about.
  4. When you plan building a shed, you need to consider the tools and materials needed. You will need a basic list of materials. As you plan building a shed, it would be a good idea to write down a list of what you consider necessary, and then you could check it off against the plans and detailed schedule. A detailed materials list will be covered in the building plans schedule and specifications.
  5. The next step in building a shed is flooring. You will want to decide what type of flooring you think will be most suitable in your shed. Depending on what all you plan on storing in your shed, a split floor idea may be beneficial. You may want concrete flooring or other hard wearing surface where you will be storing any vehicles or machinery. However, for where you may be storing home goods; a tile flooring may be more suitable.
  6. After you have planned the basics, you need to consider the lighting both in and out of the shed. An overhead light may be all you need for where your vehicles, tractors, and lawn mowers will be stored. However, you may need more lighting in other areas for various reasons, especially if you are going to use it as a workshop. So, lighting is definitely something you will want to think about according to what will be stored where, the structure and layout of your shed.
  7. Finally, one of the most important things to consider is the overall purpose of the shed. Obviously, sheds can be used for many things including storage, building areas, an extra play area, housing animals or just a plain 'retreat for those with too much testosterone or solitude. If however you choose to use it for business purposes, you need to consider more in terms of a fit out, general purpose and planning the fixtures. If this ends up being the case, then planning is absolutely imperative.

As you can see, there are several things to think about when building a shed. It would be smart to evaluate each step before proceeding to putting all of the steps into action. Taking your time in the planning process will really benefit how your shed turns out, and how often you use it. After all, you want to make it something to be proud of.

Are you considering what you should do for your next home improvement project? How about getting custom closets made and installed for your home? Virtually any home owner understands the importance of having plenty of storage space, especially with large families or families with children. But these days it is not enough to just have closet space; you need closets that are built for function, quality, and durability. This is why choosing a custom job for your closet needs is recommended. This article will discuss the benefits and advantages of having your closets customized for your home and your family's needs.

What exactly do we mean when we talk about customizing your closets for your bedroom, living room, bathroom, or any other room in your home? This can mean one of two things: either creating the entire closet itself according to your specifications (like having sliding closet doors added), or adding organizers that go into your closet space to make it more efficient. In truth, you will more than likely want to tackle both when you start a customized project for your closets so you get the best all-around design possible.

Arguably the main benefit of having yourself or a professional custom-build your closet space comes with having storage space exactly how you like it. You do not have to set up for whatever exists when you buy a home. Instead, you can come up with the best closet design that fits your needs and requirements, which vary from family to family. Custom closets are exactly what you want, and are built according to your specifications. You can make them as big or small as you want, with any arrangement of shelves and any type of door you can imagine. The power is in your hands to make your storage space the best it can be from your perspective, not from that of a previous owner.

Another advantage you will receive when you decide to make your closets customized is efficiency. Arranging your closet's space – including shelves and any organizers you decide to have built in – dramatically increases the efficiency of your closet. For starters, you can save space even with your doors by using bifold closet doors instead of standard ones. You can also, for example, build a special shelf system for storing shoes. Many individuals out there would love to have a tidy, organized space to store shoes. With customized storage space, you can make that happen in your home.

Simply giving yourself more room to store clothing, appliances, tools, and more is a great advantage to customizing all of the closets in your home. Expand your closet space to make a walk-in unit. Put in built-in hangers that collapse, allowing you to hang more garments. Take advantage of every single inch of space you have available to you when you pursue custom closets.

Having closets that are built according to your standards is something every home owner should decide for the benefits and advantages described above. With customized storage space, you can not go wrong.

Making Plans: In Search of a Bike Storage Shed

Space … There's so much of the damn stuff, just lying around cluttering up the place. But, irritatingly, there's never enough of the elusive commodity when you need it. Like now, for example. Space … There's so much of the damn stuff, just lying around cluttering up the place. But, irritatingly, there's never enough of the elusive commodity when you need it.

Like now, for example. I'm in a flat currently with two big bedrooms and a good sized living room – enough space you'd think for any normal couple. But heck no, we have a problem. A bike problem. We have twice the amount of bikes than bedrooms. Actually, I'm lying, we have more – there's a fifth bike that we're currently getting rid of, and have been getting rid of for about 6 months. Funnily enough, it never manages to be actually got rid of.

What I need is a shed. What I'd give for a shed. Imagine being able to have the bikes hung on the wall in a room where I could have oil, grease and lube lying around without risk of a sharp word from the good lady. A room in which I could keep the bike stand assembled at all times, always ready for a quick gear adjustment, without having it used clothes hangar whenever my back's turned. A room in which I could clean the bike, unworried that the flat downstairs will be flooded by the crap sluicing off my ill-treated steed.

Of course, first I need a garden, but that's not impossible. I've got a communal garden at the moment, and space in it for a wooden bike palace, so all I need is a bit of inspiration. Lately, I randomly came across a few sites which advertised plans for building your own shed, which got me thinking. I've always imagined you just went to B & Q and got yourself one, but they were always a bit expensive, and not quite ideal for bikes, being a bit too square rather than long and bike shaped. But these plans seemed to show how easy it was to build your own, and to your own spec.

To be fair, when it comes down to it, they're pretty basic – 4 flat wooden bits for walls, and 2 flat, felted wooden bits for the roof – hey presto, a shed! Of course, there are a few extra details – brackets to attach the walls to each other, and fittings to secure the roof to the walls. Plus, of course, it could have been useful to have a hole in the shed through which to gain entry – something commonly called a door. Light is also a handy thing, windows being clever contraptions providing impressive amounts of this illumination resource. But, funnily enough, these are also reliably easy to put in, hinges and screws having been in use for more centuries than we care to recount, and by less able people than you.

A bike shed obviously is not complete without a good method of storage and I've been looking at a few options, ranging from horizontal against-the-wall racks, like those from Topeak, to vertical hangers which screw into the wall. The former tend to hold bikes by their crossbars, stacking two or four in their normal alignment, in two decks, one above the other. These can come, like I said, in a lean against the wall fashion, which requires very little installation and not much support from the wall apart from, despite, a small bracket to stop it toppling over. Others are actually free standing and do not even need a wall to lean against. The advantage of these is absolutely no installation, and doubling up as a maintenance stand. These tend to be pretty expensive though, from £ 150 upwards.

The latter mentioned previously, the vertical hanger, can make a little more space, as each bike hangs just from it's front wheel and they stack, side by side, so you can tend to hang a large number in a small space on a wall. Disadvantages of these, however, include more difficult installation as they have to support the whole weight of the bike and so need much more robust support, both from the wall (you'll need to find the wooden spars for this) and the screws that hold it in (big ones … long ones …). Plus, this method of storage has been known to cause wheel warping.

Whichever method of storage you choose, you'll need the shed of your dreams to install them in, so get involved in the self-shedding revolution – get yourself some free plans plans, grab the hammer and start building. Your bikes, your good lady and your oil soaked carpet will thank you.

Let’s Talk About Sheds

Are you looking for some new, unique projects for woodworking? Consider this. Are you looking for some new, unique projects for woodworking? Consider this.

Most people have a shed somewhere on their property where they keep all of their garden tools, lawn equipment and maybe some fertilizer and old paint buckets full of long forgotten paints that they do not know what to do with. Woodworkers, however, find the shed a magical place. Where they can step inside the walls of their man-cave for a while and do not have to worry about family or household matters or the kids running around or the infant crying or just to get out of the house for a while and just submerge themselves into their woodworking projects.

They want to be confident that they are working in a strong structure with plenty of space that is designed to be secure from rain and the elements while they are creating new and unique woodworking projects. They choose to have their tools organized and safe and their unfinished projects for woodworking kept dry and ready to go when they are ready to work on them.

Maybe your shed has been around for some time and it's getting harder and harder to move around in it or maybe the floor is getting weak in places or the roof has a few leaks in it, it might be time to think long and hard about the challenge of building yourself a new shed. If that sounds like you and you are something experienced, then go for it.

There are plenty of options for building your own unique shed. Find ready-made designs or kits, complete with technical plans and building materials for your project. However you are kind of stuck with what they've given you as far as particular size, shape, window and door options. Depending on your own experience in woodworking and that probably you've never built anything like this before, this might be a real option for you. A woodworking project of this magnitude should not be lightly and should only be attempted if you've got the skills and have done some similar projects in the past, just do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

If you are an experienced woodworker, then your first concern, before you start building, is looking for some plans and decide what all the design specifications for your new shed are going to be. There are a couple of ways to go about this. You can draw up your own personal shed plans, if you have those skills, or work with a ready-made project plan where you choose the design. The second choice is easy, simple and a time saver, but the first allows you to get creative and adjust the plans to suit what you need. You're going to find a plenty of options when you start looking for new plans, just remember that the idea is to find one with a functional design and you want it to look good on your property as well.

Sheds come in two styles, apex and pent. The apex roof is standard and little more advanced with the high point in the center and it slopes down on both sides. The pent shed has a single sloping roof. Like I said, the apex roof is standard, is very sturdy and durable, it's just a little more complicated and cost a little more. If you want a big shed, then this is the design you need. As far as the preferred wood for your project consider cedar, pre-treated pine, oak or redwood that are water and pest resistant.

Finding new projects for woodworking can be fun no matter what your personal experience level is.

As spring cleaning season approaches, it is a good time for home owners to make sure their property is secure and maintained. One of the most often overlooked home security measures is a home's garage door, and now is a great time to update your garage door security. While many people do not realize it, a garage door is one of the most vulnerable places in your home, as it can allow an intruder easy access.

In addition to getting inside your home, intruders often target garages because they know that people keep possessions there: cars, motorcycles, sporting equipment, tools, and more. Follow these simple guidelines to improve your garage door security and help protect your home more effectively.

1. Keep it Closed!
No matter whether you are inside the house or leaving to go out, an open garage can let a burglar enter your home in the matter of seconds. People can often forget to take this extra security precaution or do not do it because they think their garage is safe if they are in the house. But cases have shown that burglars will enter a garage not only to steal but also hide out, and this applies to both attached and detached garages.

2. Updated Automatic Garage Door Openers
The technology used in automatic door openings has undergone a lot of development since the early models. This new technology makes it harder for intruders to break the code of used to unlock automatic garage doors. If your automatic garage door opener is an old model, consider updating it now.

3. Get a Key-Chain Remote Opener
New opens come in the form of key-chain remotes so that you can carry your remote with you at all times. This way, you have the peace of mind knowing that if some one was to break into your car, they would not be able to gain access to your garage or your home.

4. Maintain Windows
Keeping the windows on your garage in top condition is just as important as maintaining the other windows in your home. Loose and rotting window frames make it easy for burglars to pry a window open and gain access to the valuables in your home.

5. Treat It like Your Front Door
Make sure internal and external doors leading to your garage are always kept locked and bolted. Many people may think that internal doors inside their home are safe if the garage door is down, but this is not true. You never know when a burglar may gain access to your garage and an open inside door is like an invitation to come in!

They can be opened using an electronic opener or manually, they are typically used to secure the home or commercial building. Garage Doors can be opened using an electronic opener or manually, garage doors are typically used to secure the home or commercial building. There are a number of options for installing them, both for residential and commercial spaces.

Ones used for commercial spaces are typically used for an automobile business to protect its assets. These commercial varieties are made up of fiberglass, steel, or aluminum. Commerical ones are much larger than residential garage doors. Commercial doors need to be large in order to cover a larger space or larger vehicles. They are typically industrialized and lack patterns or decorations. However, they are much stronger than their residential counterparts. They can come equipped with a special mechanism to keep the doors heavily secured and locked.

Residential ones are used specifically for the home. These kinds are used to store motorcycles, cars, and other household equipment. Therefore, residential ones are typically much smaller because they do not have to store large items. The cost to install residential ones can vary. Some of these variables include the design, as well as the manufacturing material. The materials used to build residential ones vary from durable options including metal and fiberglass, to the more traditional wood. Residential garage doors have the added benefit of securing the home. Residential doors are manufactured to provide convenient usage in the home as well as security. Although they are not made with the same steel or fiberglass material as commercial doors, they are made just as strong because residential ones must prevent access to the rest of the home.

Sectionals are a good option for both commercial and residential. These sectionals are usually manufactured with six to eight panels, which makes it easier for the doors to manually slide up to open. They can bring an added aesthetic appeal, especially to a home. Sectional doors occupy the same amount of space as a monolithic door that does not have panels. However, sectional doors provide strength and protection. These doors are intended for simple installation and are lightweight. Sectional garage doors are made of wood, polyethylene, and aluminum.

Both commercial and residential garage doors can open with the simple touch of a button. However, this is a somewhat complicated electrical set-up that will require professional installation. Additionally, it is possible to connect the garage doors to the building or home security system for added protection.

Building A Shed Will Save You Money

Are you a Homeowner? Do you ever look around the house and yard and say to yourself “I sure wish I had somewhere to put all this stuff?” Or maybe you have a bunch of things stored in a pay by the month storage facility that you will probably never get out unless you give it away or your kids move out of the house. Well let me tell you something, those monthly storage fees really add up, not to mention the unnecessary wear on the things that are left out in the elements for Mother Nature to seek and destroy.

Maybe it's time to invest in a storage shed! Yea, that's right, a good investment too. A storage shed can really pay off, and it will add value to your home. I recently was undertaking the task of building my own house and I was living in an RV on my land while this was taking place. I preceded about a year or so to move in but it turned into almost 2 years. Meanwhile I was paying for all my debts to sit in a commercial storage facility. For the two 10×10 spaces It cost me nearly $ 3,800 for all of the accumulated fees. It turned out that for the space I was renting, I could have just put a storage shed on my property and put all of my stuff in there until I was through building. Not only would I have had saved a lot of money, I would have earned equity in my house by installing the storage shed, plus I would not have had the extra trouble of moving my stuff out of storage and to my newly built house I ended selling most of my furniture so absolutely I paid to keep things in storage that I did not even put in the new house, which a waste of money. Of course I did not plan on the house taking that long to build but I still would have come out ahead even if I was through building in the year that I had predicted. Another lesson learned on my part!

Another great reason for building your own shed now is that prices will most likely keep rising. With the world economy like it is the general price of building materials will keep rising, while the quality of workmanship will keep declining. I can tell you this, that all the trips I made to the storage facility to try to find something I needed ended up in me just getting upset because I could not find what I needed due to the fact that it was all packed in very tightly, so make sure to mark your boxes on all sides to make identifying your beloveds, another lesson learned. If you are going to invest in a storage shed you should build it a little bigger that you think, you will be happy you did!

When I finally went to gather all of my marriages out of storage I was a bit upset. The place I was using claimed have climate control 100% of the time but the few really valuable antiques I had in there were damaged due to “the lack of humidity control” as quoted by my insurance company. I was heartbroken to see my only family air looms damaged more than they were when the movers moved everything. I have a bad back and my wife, well, could not really do much in the way of moving furniture. If I had only built the storage shed sooner I could have saved a lot of stress and some money too.

Either if you have someone build your shed or you build it yourself it is a very wise investment. A storage shed can really help you organize your house by “opening up” a lot of space in your house. I have a 2 year old son that we did not plan on having when built the house and so space became an issue. Now that we have built 3 sheds on our property we have plenty of space for our extra things and all the stuff that was stuffed in our small closets in the house. We have a typical 16×12 storage shed, a 20×20 climate controlled shed for collections and antiques, and a metal shed for all of our garden and yard equipment. I can not tell you how much I love my shed spaces and I will probably build more, especially seeing that we have almost 9 acres of land and are planning on raising chickens and maybe goats too! We have a bad coyote problem so raising animals is a problem, but if I build the right type of sheds for them they will have a great chance of surviving.

Sheds can also be a great place for your pets to stay, especially when you go on vacation. Boarding fees alone are enough to make a vacation unaffordable, but if you build your own shed and take into consideration your pets, you will come out saving a lot of money. Just make sure that you have someone to take care of your furry friends! My neighbors and I trade off taking care of each other's pets, and we both have ample storage sheds for the pets and their necessities. This makes it easier to get someone to look after your pets, plus if you really want to get serious you can put a camera in the pets shed and look in on them via the internet, while you are on vacation. It really is that simple to save a lot of money and stress, just build your own shed, you will not regret it.

Finally you may also save money by building a storage shed in case you ever have to move in your elders or a distracted friend. You can easily convert a shed into a small efficiency if you need too or build a new shed to make into their apartment. By the time someone needs elder care they will not really need a lot of things in the way of furniture and stuff so a 12 x 16 shed can be plenty of room, especially if you make a barn style shed, which you can make a nice 2nd story loft in.

A shed is almost limitless to what you can do with it so consider building your own shed today. You will be proud of yourself when you do build your own shed, and your neighbors will be jealous. Your new shed can also become a “man shed” too which, well as you probably know, can also relieve a lot of family stress, and save on money by not visiting the neighborhood pub too often! Children can have fun playing in sheds, just do not let them in without adult supervision and making sure there is nothing hazardous or dangerous for them to get into. Sheds are also great for making into children's playhouses or “retirement homes” for your old pets. Some people are allergic to pets and need a good outdoor place for their loved ones when the weather is bad. I know my wife is allergic to me so I am glad to have three sheds to choose from!

I can not think of any reasons not to build a shed unless your neighborhood association does not allow one, which is quite ridiculous if I say so. Everyone needs a storage shed on their property if you have a yard for one. It can be a very nice shed that is finished out just like your house. Just think, you go to paint and re carpet the house one day and you have to put some things out in the yard and all of the sudden you are getting a thunderstorm and all of you things get soaked !! Then your neighborhood associate comes over to tell you that you can not keep furniture in your yard. Your garage is already stuffed full but If you had a shed you may have been able to put most of your valuables into your storage shed and saved you the grief of watching your blessings get rained on. It has happened to me and it was yet another lesson learned.

You can hope for the best but expect the worst! For instance, several years ago in another house I lived in, there was a small tornado and one of the smaller sheds on the property was uplifted and thrown into a huge tree in my yard. Even though I thought I was out a shed, since the shed was very old, I was still awarded more than enough by the insurance company to build a completely new shed to replace the old one.

So my suggestion is to build a shed now. Do not wait until you really need a storage shed because you will tend to rush the project and end up not getting the shed that you deserve as a hardworking homeowner. My passion has led me to the development of this website so please take in all the information on this site and make sure to bookmark it as I am always adding new articles on sheds and shed building. I have shed plans available for purchase and I have some links to great free plans, but most importantly I have valuable information you need when building your own shed.
